The Phantom:
A Publishing History in Spain

by Bob Griffin and Rafa Avilés Rodríguez, with contributions from Chris Smith.

In Spain, The Phantom is known as El Hombre Enmascarado, which translates to "The Masked Man". He has proven to be an extremely popular comic book character over the years, and numerous publications have been devoted to him. Below is a basic and substantive list of the various Spanish Phantom publications. More detailed information about the comics printed between 1963 and 1971 (with cover scans) is available by clicking on the appropriate titles. If anyone has any further ammendments we would welcome their input.

Artist:Moore & McCoy
# of issues:132
Size:22.5cm x 28cm
Buru Lan commenced this series with the 4th daily story "Little Tommy", and continued chronologically thereafter. Later they decided to go back and print the first 3 daily stories, and labelled them "Series O" in order to distinguish them from the regular series. In total there were 132 issues. Furthermore, every three months, remainders of these comics were re-bound into 248 page volumes and sold; there were 8 volumes in total. The same was done in 1976 with the re-release of 162 page volumes (7), and again in 1983 with 64 page volumes (4). These were not new comics and only contain previously printed material. This was basically a marketing strategy designed to get rid of the remainders.
