  • Message from the Publisher:
Thank you for purchasing the 2007 Annual Special!
It's a little hard to grasp the fact it was 17 years ago that Frew decided to publish our first, oversize Special to celebrate our 1000th issue! All the annuals have soared in value on the speciality comics market and, according to Johnson's Official Phantom Price Guide, the first (#972 published in 1991) now commands a selling price of $60 in mint condition. In years to come, it is most likely Frew issue #972 will hit the magic $100 mark. So - if you have one in the original plastic shrink-wrap and containing the replica of our very first issue - put it somewhere safe in case you'd like to turn a neat profit one day!
Hope you enjoy the line up of stories in our 2007 Annual Special. All are by Lee Falk and with one exception (The Blue Gang) all are illustrated by the great Sy Barry. All have been out of print for at least 15 years and all have been reproduced from remastered originals. [Comment from Guran: Jim has apparently forgotten that he reprinted one of these stories only five years ago!]
Once again we have included a bonus replica of Frew #16, originally published in 1949. Ray Moore fans are in for a treat, because #16 contains the wonderful Adventure in Algiers which Ray illustrated some 69 years ago! The replica issues have always been popular, if for no other reason than fans love to learn what the Australian comic book publishing industry was up to more than a half-century ago! A reminder to new Phantom fans however, that advertising in the replica issues is no longer valid - and especially those advertisements which offer free gifts or club memberships! And - just in case you weren't around in the pre-decimal currency era in Australia, the '6d' cover price on Adventure in Algiers, stands for six pence. (Back in 1949 we had pounds, shillings and pence currency. There were twenty shillings to the pound and each shilling was made up of 12 pence. Six pence is a little hard to equate to today's decimal currency!]
Our next issue will be Frew #1468 which will go on sale on 2 February. The issue will feature the new story Son of the Jungle by Tony De Paul and Kari Leppänen, an adventure with Tarzan overtones! To follow will be another episode of the Temple of the Gods series and that will take us a little closer to the next big event for 2007! In April, Frew will publish its 1500th edition of The Phantom an Australian and world record for the hotly competitive comics industry. Naturally, our 1500th issue will be a collector's special and it is certain to instantly increase in value as did our 1000th edition. I'm not giving away too many secrets just yet about what the 1500th edition will contain. Suffice to say all the stories will be historically important and will be creations of Lee Falk. The 1500th Issue will come with a very special bonus lift-out publication which has been almost two years in the making! The lift-out will be a world first in the long history of publications linked to The Phantom! You can start guessing now, but I'll be surprised if anybody outside Frew comes up with the answer!
