The Phantom:
A Publishing History in Brazil

by Sérgio Takara and Bryan Shedden

Editora Globo (1987-1993)

Title:Fantasma Especial #8
Publisher:Rio Gráfica e Editora (RGE) and Editora Globo
Year:1983-1989
Issues:37
Size:13.5cm x 20.5cm
Pages:66
The first 7 issues of this colour series were published biannually by RGE until the end of 1986. The parent company, Editora Globo, then decided to cancel the practice of publishing comics under their RGE tradename, and continued to produce Fantasma comics for several years under the name Editora Globo. It was still essentially the same company but with a different name. The Fantasma Especial series re-started at #8 in February 1987, and changed to a monthly schedule that lasted until August 1989.

Title:Fantasma Extra #1 #29
Year:1987-1992
Issues:48
Size:13.5cm x 20.5cm
Pages:66
Globo started this series in February 1987 with the name Extra on the cover, but from #29 (May 1991) this name was dropped from the cover and replaced by a very small title Gibi Apresenta. In both cases, the title Fantasma was the dominant feature. The series mainly reprinted newspaper strip stories, but some issues contained original stories from Semic in Scandinavia. They were published bimonthly until #22 (Oct 1990), before switching to a monthly schedule. A total of 48 full colour issues were published before the series was cancelled in December 1992.

Title:O Fantasma #1
Year:1989
Issues:4
Size:13.5cm x 19.5cm
Pages:36
This series reprinted DCs 4 issue colour miniseries by Peter David (writer), Joe Orlando (penciller) and Dennis Janke (inker). Globo maintained the pocketbook size from their Fantasma Extra series and reprinted the original cover art.

Title:Fantasma #1
Year:1989-1990
Issues:13
Size:17.5cm x 26cm
Pages:36
This series reprinted DCs 13 issue colour regular series by Mark Verheiden (writer) and Luke McDonnell (pencils & inks). Globo used the original comic book size for this series and reprinted the original cover art.

Title:Gibi #1
Year:1993
Issues:13
Size:13.5cm x 19.5cm
Pages:130
This black & white series was Globo's last forray into Phantom comics. The first issue of Gibi contained The Wedding of The Phantom, but all subsequent editions were reprints of old Fantasma stories. Other characters were published alongside The Phantom in this series, including Mandrake and Beetle Bailey.
